VOTE: Vote in Favor Abstain Vote in Favor Vote in Favor Vote in Favor 0 February 3, 2009 The Elm Street Historical Commission: HISTORIC NORTHAMPTON Museum Education Center I am writing to ask that you reconsider your ruling against the addition of ornamental brackets to Lilly Lombard's Elm Street property. I have examined both the house and the brackets and feel they are architecturally harmonious. Northampton owes its vitality to the imaginative restoration of its historic downtown and neighborhoods. In that sense, historic preservation or restoration does not mean a slavish replication of archetypal architectural forms. In reality, there is no "pure" form of surviving historic architecture. To freeze buildings, in an artificial time zone is to create a sterile streetscape that never existed historically. No one wants to live in a museum. In my mind, a historical commission should interpret preservation very broadly, focusing on the whole landscape or streetscape rather than on individual architectural details of particular buildings. It is a,harmonious whole, that matters and homeowners should have wide latitude in interpreting their home as in the spirit rather than the letter of its architectural tradition. As a resident of the Elm Street district, I believe we should encourage rather than restrict such interpretation. Sincerely, Kerry W. Buckley.
