Due to its historical significance, age, and condition this 2 1/2 story house needs a new electrical system to bring it to code compliance by removing antiquated knob & tube wiring, install all new wiring, devices, service and smoke/co detectors. This preservation effort is far beyond the financial reach of this community service organization. The house is open to the public through guided tours and an annual holiday open house. The Betty Allen DAR is a 501c(3) nonprofit. For over a century, members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution have been dedicated to historical preservation, promotion of education, and patriotic endeavor. We accomplish these through preservation of historic property, youth education, and we work closely with veteran’s services and other non-profit organizations to support under-served and underprivileged populations. We seek funding to preserve our chapter house and to perpetuate our programs of community support. The Betty Allen DAR is a 501c(3) nonprofit service organization with the simple mission of promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. We accomplish these through support of historic property and local cemetery preservation, youth education, and we work closely with veteran’s services and other non-profit organizations to support underserved and underprivileged populations. Refer to Attachment#1 - Deed One of the finest remaining Colonial houses in Northampton, the building is located in the Fort Hill Historic District and recorded in the registrations of Historic Places as the “Clapp House”. Refer to Attachment #2 – Topographical Map Refer to Attachment #3 - Book 823 Refer to Attachment #4 (Ft Hill Historic District) – Map Clapp House Refer to Attachment #5 (Original Ft Hill District Clapp House) - Map The historical significance of the Ebenezer “Clapp House” is documented in the book The Great River; Art & Society of the Connecticut Valley, 1635-1820 (1985) Ward & Hosley (eds). Published by the Wadsworth Atheneum. Its historical and architectural significance is documented in 1970 by the Northampton Historical Society. Refer to Attachment #6 – Art Refer to Attachment #7 – 38B-102 The Betty Allen DAR has a long history of supporting Western Massachusetts educators and students. We annually sponsor an Outstanding Teacher of American History Contest. Our 2021 winner, Ms. Kelly R. Brown is a teacher from Easthampton High School. We promoted Ms. Brown who went on to win the state and the national DAR competitions. Ms. Brown received the National DAR award and recognition at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. as the national Outstanding Teacher of American History in June 2022. The Betty Allen Chapter promoted and financially supported Ms. Brown through fundraisers for these competitions and travel. The Betty Allen DAR chapter provides support and materials in promoting good citizenship in local schools, and the importance of annual Constitution week. 2 We have partnered with the VA in Northampton to donate needed clothing, bedding, and toiletries for homeless and returning veterans as well as the USO. We deliver handwritten holiday greetings to veterans in the Leeds and Holyoke Soldier’s Home. Thousands of masks were made and donated to veterans by our members during the Covid years. In recognition of and to further our work with veterans, the Betty Allen Chapter DAR received a $1,000 grant from the Florence Bank Corporate Giving Program in July 2022! Through the Mary Lyons Foundation partnership, we collect for donation hats and scarves for elementary school children and are active in their campaign collecting infant clothing, diapers, and blankets which are distributed through Greenfield Hospitals to needy mothers. Our members perform volunteer services at historical societies, non-profit organizations and engage in conservation projects. The Betty Allen DAR Chapter commissioned Pioneer Valley Inspections LLC to conduct a home inspection of the property at 148 South Street, Northampton, MA 01060 to assist in identifying and prioritizing restoration efforts. Numerous hazardous conditions associated with the antiquated electrical system, knob and tube wiring, and missing smoke / co detectors make this preservation project a priority. Photographs of the building and electrical system in need of replacement are included in this report. Refer to Attachment #8 – Inspection Report Electrical Experts conducted an onsite visit and estimated the cost for a new electrical system to bring the whole house to stringent code compliance called for removing antiquated knob & tube wiring, and installing all new wiring, upgrading devices, service and installing smoke/co detectors. Cost estimate = $62,167.25 (after a discount of $564.75). This preservation effort is far beyond the financial reach of this small community service organization. Thank you for your consideration of this request from the Betty Allen Chapter DAR for funding the Upgrade Electrical System to Bring Historical Building to Modern Code Requirements Project. Repointing is something that is usually required every 20-50 years if done properly. Repointing should be done when the mortar joints are crumbling and loose. Sometimes even small stones will fall out. It is important that a fieldstone wall be repointed before the wall is allowed to weaken and collapse.
