I am writing this letter on behalf of O'Connell Development Group in support that they are awarded the necessary funding needed to restore St John Cantius Church so that it can be reused to serve the community, preserved and protected, and honored as a historical landmark of Northampton Massachusetts. Not only is this church of distinctive and exquisite design, but it also was monumental for the Polish immigrants who settled in Northampton and the neighboring towns . It holds many memories of a culture whose families were brave enough to leave their homeland in order to better their lives and it is an inspiration to our community of how hard work, determination, faith, and care for one another can move mountains. It also has special meaning to myself and my 3 girls. When they were young children attending People's Institute, I would walk to pick them up and "Make us walk all........ the way home!" Apparently, this image still lives in their minds as one of the ways they were "tortured" as children! After I could not stand all the whining and complaining, I would just remind them " we just have to get to the church and then we are almost home." They would perk up because they knew St John as a neighborhood landmark and always asked questions and marveled at it when we would walk by. And they knew that their terrible walk would soon be over! I appreciate your time and any consideration you can make for this special beautiful church.
