Preserve the Hawley St church.pdfA measured view in favor of
Preserving the Church
Northampton is a unique and special town. The church is a meaningful part
of the town’s character and charm. This town character has many impacts,
and some are more tangible than others. I see both sides of this
discussion, and I am swayed by both views.
With all this in mind, I conclude that we should preserve the church. Here’s a
concise summary of my view.
Even though it’s with public funds
This counterpoint holds weight: there are other ways to spend this money. I feel
sway about this matter! Even with it in mind, I still conclude that preserving the
church is worthwhile.
Tangible impact
The church is a meaningful part of the unique character and charm of Noho which
draws visitors, and those visitors invigorate our shops, restaurants, and spirit.

Intangible impact
The unique character and charm of Noho makes us feel good. It makes us proud
of our community, puts a skip in our step, and makes us glad to be here. These
types enhancements to our lifestyle add up, and make for a town of happy,
healthy wellness.
I support O’Connell Development Group's request for $500,000 in CPA
funding to save St. John Cantius from demolition, restore the exterior of the
church to historic preservation standards, and provide the city with a
permanent historic preservation easement.
Thanks!
My spirit is appreciative of all the thought, attention and energy that goes into the
deliberation, and the application of your wise expertise. It’s not an easy process!
Thank you.
