Dear Community Preservation Committee,
I am writing in support for O’Connell Development Group to receive their request for $500,000 in CPA funding to preserve
the exterior structures of Saint John Cantius Church and place the church under a perpetual historic preservation
easement.
The history and architecture behind this remarkable church is amazing. The Polish community immigrated to
Northampton, worked and saved their pennies to build this magnificent piece of historical architecture the early 1900’s.
The exterior is unique with its rough textured buff colored brick and trimmed with terra cotta which attracts visitors to
Northampton from a far. It is similar to walking the streets of Europe. Not to mention, the glorious rose window in the
front. The bell tower is part of Northampton’s skyline which aids in navigating through the city streets in this historic
district.
Being a native of Northampton, I walk past SJC on a daily basis and it gives me such pleasure knowing that our City is
keen on preserving our history.
Please support the developer in funding to restore the exterior of this Romanesque Church.
