We are longstanding residents of Northampton, once residing on Main St. and now in Ward 3. The building is an integral part of Northampton’s history and provides an identity and aesthetic that makes our Hawley Street neighborhood what it is today. We strongly support the request made by O’Connell to use CPA funding to restore the original historical building and to use it for rental units. Although this is not what we believe to be the optimal use of the structure, we believe it both preserves a valuable historical building and provides needed housing in our city. We also highly value the preservation easement that will accompany the property once the CPA funds are used to restore the structure. With this, the building will exist in perpetuity.
