We are writing to express our wholehearted support for CPA funding to restore the façade of
St. John Cantius and assure the preservation of this unique, historic, beautiful building by
means of a permanent easement. We are forty-five year residents of Butler Place, one street
over from the church, but we are not writing on behalf of our neighborhood alone. Saving
the church will add badly needed housing stock, will enhance the integrity of the Historic
District designation, and will contribute to the overall distinction of Northampton’s
commercial and cultural downtown. It will be a victory not only for those who fought the
church’s demolition, but for the city as a whole.
