Dear Commissioners:
The St. John Cantius Church on Hawley Street was important in the Polish American Community that flourished here
beginning in the late 19th century and continues to this day. The church has a significant architectural design. Its historic
importance was verified when our local Historic Commission declared it a HISTORIC LANDMARK. Its structural
soundness was verified when the city offered to purchase the building and use it as a shelter for street people.
I hope you will give favorable consideration to the proposal of O’Connell Hawley LLC to receive money to help restore the
exterior of St. John Cantius Church that will allow its subsequent re-use.
