Dear CPC Members,
As a former Community Preservation Committee member having reviewed dozens of CPA
applications, and as someone who, while directing Grow Food Northampton, helped to shepherd
the CPA-funded Bean-Allard project that leveraged millions of state dollars to advance
conservation, recreation and historic goals in our community, I strongly support the Hampshire
Council of Government’s request for $141,000 to preserve the Hampshire County Courthouse.
One of our most handsome and historic buildings, the Courthouse, along with the Academy of
Music, forms an iconic bookend on Main St. Its preservation is decades overdue.
The proposed project will leverage millions of state dollars and will demonstrate that the city of
Northampton has put “skin in this game.” And while the Hampshire County Courthouse benefits
the region as a whole, we, the residents of Northampton, enjoy this building every day in our
downtown ambling, shopping and driving. Its preservation lifts our downtown. In short, this
project is exactly what the CPA was created to support. Please fund it fully.
