Closeout Report (November, 2015)
We are pleased to close out the CPA grant for the rehabilitation of the historic railroad arch Beaver
Brook Bridge in Leeds.
The work consisted of several phases (see expenditures below for fiscal details):
1. Structural Study (Whetstone Engineering): We commissioned a structural study of the bridge to
identify what work needed to be done to add a century of life to the deteriorating bridge.
2. Design, bidding, and construction oversight (ProTerra Design): We commissioned construction
drawings and specifications, bid documents, and then construction oversight. This charges
represent the bridge portion of a larger project.
3. State Matching Grant (Registry of Deeds): We received grant funds that supported this project. The
only charge for this grant is recording the required project agreement.
4. Construction (Gagliarducci): We removed all vegetation from the bridge and immediate buffer,
including roots that went deep into the bridge, that came from 60 years of absolutely no
maintenance between when the railroad was discontinued until the city purchase the bridge. We
then reset a few small rocks and one very large capstone rock that had been moved by root action
and frost/thaw cycles. We placed concrete blankets and riprock on the sides of the bridge. We
installed a concrete cap to the bridge, to both carry trail traffic but more importantly to prevent
water from going through the bridge, and the mandated safety railings. The final part of the work
was seeding and mulching to stabilize any exposed soil.
Thank you for making the preservation and reuse of one of the oldest and most important bridges in
Northampton possible.
