Project Summary: Please provide a brief description of the project.
Historic Northampton’s mission is to help all Northampton residents preserve and
celebrate their history in ways that honor both tradition and change. On its Bridge
Street campus, the organization maintains three historic houses listed on the National
Register, a barn, gazebo and modern education center. The three houses benefited
from a CPA grant in 2008 but expert advisors are urgently recommending additional
renovation. The back wall of Parsons House (1719) is beginning to fall away from the
building because of rotting in the back sill and posts that was never addressed in
past efforts to preserve the house. Equally insidious in all three houses is pervasive
dampness (which encourages mold and insects) coupled with the asbestos and
fumes from outdated oil burners, all of which make the buildings less than safe for
staff and visitors and cause continuing damage to the collections stored in the
basements and even on the first floors. Our plan includes replacing the back sill and
supporting the rotted posts in Parsons, updating all furnaces and boilers to more
efficient gas-fired models less likely to cause damaging puffbacks and fumes,
removing asbestos connected with current boilers, extensive mold remediation, and
the installation of professional dehumidifiers. This work, which is urgently needed,
will stabilize the structure of Parsons House and halt the ongoing deterioration to
both the buildings and the collections currently being caused by dampness, soot,
fumes, asbestos, insects, and mold.
