If checked, you must attach a completed National Register Criteria Statement form. Use as much space as necessary to complete the following entries, allowing text to flow onto additional continuation sheets. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This house represents a rare departure for architect Karl Scott Putnam from his New England historical revival bias to a Spanish revival architecture. Although there are other examples in Northampton, this may be the only version by Putnam. It is a two-story, stuccoed house with a flat roof edged by red tiles. As was common with this style, the plan of the house is L-shaped and in the angle of the two sections of the house is a red-tile-roofed portico. The entry has a round arch architrave surround and an arched foyer window. Windows are paired and their sash is 6/1. On the first floor centered on the wing is a three-part window. The house has an exterior wall chimney and an interior chimney. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1980: “This house was built in 1929 for Joseph Pickett at a cost of $20,000. Mr. Pickett was the president and treasurer of the Northampton Commercial College, an institution founded in the 1890’s by his father. The College trained and furnished stenographers and office assistants and served as an agency for the sale, rental, and repair of typewriters and adding machines.” BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Beers, F.
