the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a one-and-a-half story, clapboard sided, Cape Cod form house that is three bays wide and
two deep. A center entry on the south façade is flanked by a large fixed light window and on the west elevation a three-part window with 1/1 sash is a likely alteration. Its side gable
roof has two, hipped roof, through-cornice dormers on the south elevation and a full-width porch across the south façade that is Italianate in style with chamfered posts connected by
arched braces at the eaves. The house has an added one-story wing on the east. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state)
history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. Built before 1860 this house was the home of the Tanner family for several decades.
Edgar V. Tanner who lived here with his wife Louisa in 1870 worked as a manager in the Florence Sewing Machine Company. The house had changed hands by 1885 when it was owned by H. J.
Smith. Smith was gone by 1895 and in his or her place was M. Carroll. In 1919 this was the home of Justin Hays who remained there through 1940. He was a physician. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or
