the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. The Hyde House is a Queen Anne style, gable-and-wing form house. It is one-and-a-half stories in
height under a gabled roof and its exterior is divided into bands of clapboards and shingles separated by stringcourses. In the angle between the front-gabled section and the wing is
a corner porch that has been class-enclosed. On the front-gabled section is a one-story angled bay centered on its south façade. In the wing a cross-gable is centered on the south elevation
adding height to the interior. There is a one-story ell on the rear of the house. Windows in the second story are paired and have 1/1 sash. This house is representative of the housing
of the rising middle-class in Northampton at the end of the 19th century. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history.
Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1980: “This house was built in 1896 for Andrew Hyde at a cost of $3000.
Mr. Hyde was a violin maker, who had a small ‘factory’ in a wood frame building in the rear of his house. Parsons Street was originally known as Pine Street and has existed as a path
