the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a two-story house under a front-gable roof. It is three bays wide and four bays deep, has
a two-story ell on the west, and a one-story addition in the angle between the house and ell on the north elevation. Originally the house was Italianate in style and one remaining stylistic
detail is the oculus window on the east gable field. A second feature is the wide eaves overhang with thinly boxed eaves. The house also has a through-cornice dormer on its north elevation,
a feature that appeared during the Italianate style. Entry into the house is beneath a portico on turned posts, a later addition to the house, as is its vinyl siding in clapboard and
shingle patterns. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1980: “This is one of the early houses built on North Maple Street. In 1867, G. F. Miller filed a subdivision plan for the
northern half of the street. This coincided with the opening of the Williamsburg Railroad, which passed through Florence and had a freight house and depot on the southern end of North
