space as necessary to complete the following entries, allowing text to flow onto additional continuation sheets. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Describe architectural features. Evaluate
the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a two-and-a-half story Colonial Revival style two-family home with a side gable roof. This
two-family house form was quite common in Northampton. At opposite ends of the front façade are large two-story bays that are topped by large pedimented gables. The bays have chamfered
corners with brackets at the eaves, which is stylistic carry-over from the Queen Anne period. A one-story hipped roof porch extends across the full width of the front façade and its
center is marked by a pediment whose tympanum is decorated with an ornate, low-relief swag. The porch has Tuscan columns, solid frieze, and a balustrade with “ship’s wheel” pattern interspersed
between groups of balusters. Windows are 2/1 sash and the original windows are covered by metal storm windows. Two center chimneys rest on the ridge line of the roof. On the southwestern
elevation of the home is a two-and-a-half story ell and there is a one-story porch at its most western corner. The house is now sided with asbestos shingles, but it still retains a slate
roof. The house rests on a brick foundation. There is a two bay pyramidal roofed garage is to the rear of the house. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain
its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. In February 1895, Harriet L. Clapp, heir
to the the D. Munroe Clapp estate, sold a lot to Mr. Newton and Mrs. Chabot. During the next year this large double residence was built. Mrs. Chabot lived next door at 19 Munroe St.
and undoubtedly rented her half of the house. Mr. Newton was employed as a clerk downtown and is first listed as living at 15 Munroe St. in the 1896-97 directory. Alvin and Gloria Coz
