the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a red brick building, three-and-a-half stories in height with an exposed basement on the
east and south elevations. Like its neighbor the Columbian Building at 158-162 Main Street, this building has an attic level that in this building consists of small, pairs of brownstone-arched
windows sharing a single sill. The building is four bays wide and five bays deep and windows windows on all the lower stories, with the exception of the storefront, have straight-head
brownstone lintels and brownstone sills. This is typical of commercial buildings constructed mid-19th century. The building has a console-supported cornice and the first story 21st century
storefront occupies all but the westernmost bay in which is a recessed entry to the upper stories. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations
with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1975: “The block at the corner of Main and
(Old) South Street is one of the earliest brick blocks on Main Street. Winthrop Hillyer was a local merchant and holder of considerable property. In addition to several stores on Main
Street, Hillyer owned a picturesque cottage (now 351 Bridge Street) overlooking the meadows. In the early years of Smith College, Hillyer contributed a substantial sum to the school.
His $25,000 contribution for an art gallery resulted in the construction of the Hillyer Art Gallery; Hillyer later in his will left property to the college.” Winthrop Hillyer in the
1850 census was a druggist in Northampton, so the early date assigned to this building is possible. In one of the early deeds references, this building was called Hillyer’s warehouse
