the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. The E.N. Foote Block is one of at least six such blocks in Northampton that follow similar Queen
Anne designs, though their materials vary from brick to frame. The brick building is two-and-a-half stories in height under basic side gabled roof form from which projects six gabled
front gabled pavilions with decorative spandrel walls in the gable field. Between the eastern and western projecting pavilions, the apartment block is divided by two pairs of projecting
pavilions separated by three one-story front gabled entry porches. The additional shed roof projections on the entry porches were added after 1980. The porches have no other distinguishing
features, however entry doors still show original transom and partial length sidelights. Above each of the three entry porches is a shed roofed dormer. There were originally four brick
chimneys equally spaced on the roof, including one at each gable end. The two gable end chimneys remain, but one of the center chimneys along the ridgeline has been removed. Other decorative
effects in brick include brick window arches and stringcourses defining the stories. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or
state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1975, “An early brick tenement, the Foote Block, was erected
in in 1893 on High Street, now Lyman Road. The early nineties was a period of growth in Northampton and the increase in population was reflected largely in the building of a number of
tenements and multi-family houses, and in the construction of a few lavish residences. The construction of modest single family dwellings was either less common or of little news value
at this time. Tenements like the Foote Block rented for $12-15 and were in great demand, particularly when located close to the downtown area and the network of street railway lines.”
