the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. The Caleb Loud House represents the most common Greek Revival house form in Northampton, and, in
fact, is duplicated in the next house on the north. It is a gable-and-wing house, one-and-a-half stories in height under a front-gable roof. The east façade of the main block is three
bays wide with a side hall entry, and the south wing is one-story. The house has seen many alterations that compromise its integrity. The kitchen wing, which has a chimney, would originally
have had a porch crossing its east façade and would have contained a secondary entry, but has been enclosed, the entry sealed, and new windows put in place. The building has been entirely
covered in vinyl siding with the exception of its principal door surround that is unusually fanciful. It is a trabeated surround whose entablature is slightly pedimented and filled with
a scroll-cut design in low relief. There are corner blocks at each side supported on wide pilasters. Windows in the house are replacement vinyl with 1/1 sash. The main block of the house
has a single chimney centered on its roof ridge. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the
building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1980: “Caleb Loud seems to have been the individual that Loudville was named after. In 1845,
he converted a turning shop, located on the east bank of the Manhan River across the street from this house, into a paper mill. For almost half a century, he manufactured paper on this
site. At one point, there were two mills, one for manila paper and one for tissue paper. Both burned down around the turn of the century. This house was probably built when Mr. Loud
acquired the turning shop in 1845. Part of the property is located in Easthampton, part in Westhampton, but the house is located in Northampton.” BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Beers,
