sheets. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Describe architectural, structural and landscape features and evaluate in terms of other areas within the community. The Friedman Houses are four identical
apartment blocks, each divided into duplex units. They are staggered on the lot so that each receives sunlight from the south. The blocks are two-and-a-half stories in height under a
side-gable roof, one angle of which extends beyond the ridge line to create a south-facing, glazed, clerestory. The second floor projects beyond the plane of the first floor on both
north and south elevations and is framed by a projecting wall and roof so that the plane of the second floor appears to be recessed. Siding of the buildings is vertically laid wood and
as there is no ornament, the buildings are a series of relatively flat planes angled and arranged in a geometrically symmetrical order. These buildings carry the pared-down simplicity
of form established by the neighboring Cutter-Ziskind dormitories to a different level adding angles and a play between solid and void. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Explain historical development
of the area. Discuss how this relates to the historical development of the community. From Form B of 1979: “These small student apartment units represent a departure in college student
living characteristic of the 1970’s. A rejection of the institutional characteristics of dormitory housing, they allow for the student revolt against group concentration, permit the
