the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This raised Cape Cod form house appeared in western Massachusetts in some numbers around the time
of the Civil War. This house is a raised Cape though its proportions are difficult to discern due to a vine-covered porch. It is one-and-a-half stories in height under a side-gable roof
with a full-width porch across its west façade. The hipped roof porch has been glass-enclosed on its its southern half but the northern half is open and rests on posts connected by square
baluster railings. A cross-gable is centered on the west side of the roof and contains a single, segmentally arched window. One-story bays add to the complexity of the plan on the north
as does a one-story ell. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s)
the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1980: “In 1863, Isaac Jones sold Ellen Smith (his sister and wife to George Smith) this corner lot with the ‘new dwelling
house thereon.’ Mr. Smith is listed in the local directory as a ‘grainer’ and painter. He perhaps worked with Mr. Jones and his brother Charles, who were also painters.” BIBLIOGRAPHY
