the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This two-and-a-half story Queen Anne style house is typical of a large number on Elm Street in
that it has a hipped roof from which project the bays, towers and cross-gables that characterize the Queen Anne style. The hipped roof is pyramidal and has cross gables on north façade,
east and west elevations as well as two interior chimneys, one of which is ornamented with a contrasting brick panel. On the west, the cross gable becomes a three-sided bay below the
eaves line, so its chamfered corners are topped by curved consoles. On the east the cross gable’s attic level consists of an unusual triangular screened porch, which may have served
as a sleeping porch. The house has Queen Anne multi-paned windows on the first floor and a wrap around porch that crosses the north façade and turns on to the east elevation. The porch
rests on turned posts with high pedestals. It has a pedimented entry and is framed by paired posts. On the east the porch has a stacked second story under a shed roof. The house has
a rear ell of two stories and contains at first floor level on the east elevation a second screened porch. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations
with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1977: “In 1890, Frederick Macomber, a local
banker, purchased several lots from George Jewett after the Jewett property was plotted in 1887. Between 1890 and 1895, when the house appears on the Map of Northampton 1895, Macomber
built a large residence for himself. The property was sold by his heirs in 1922 and later acquired by Harvey Antil (1939), who converted the house into apartments and the barn into a
two family house. In 1973, Antil sold to David Pinchette, who has established the office for his construction company in the house, retains residence, and rents the apartments.” BIBLIOGRAPHY
