the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. Although it has had its windows replaced, this house is one of the best-preserved of the Queen
Anne style houses on Elm Street. It is two-and-a-half stories in height under a front-gable roof, and is three bays wide. A cross-gable on the east and a three-story tower topped by
a finial on the west add complexity to its rectangular plan. A wrap around porch crosses the south façade and turns on to both east and west elevations. Portions of the porch on the
east and west have been enclosed. It rests on turned half-length posts on high pedestals and has a spindle frieze. A pediment over the porch entry is gold-painted. A jetty in the south
gable is sided with a lattice pattern, and immediately above it are barge boards that rest at corners on consoles. Typical of Queen Anne exteriors, the house has bands of clapboards
and shingles separated by stringcourses. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building,
and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From Form B of 1977: “Heirs of Andrew Wood, who lived at 289 Elm Street, sold land at the corner of Massasoit Street;
first to Oren B. Smith, and Smith sold to Lewis J. Dudley on June 3, 1891. Dudley, a prominent figure in Northampton, built the house soon after that date; it appears on the Map of Northampton
1895. In 1918, the property was sold by the Trustees of Lewis Dudley to Frances T. Krause. The Krause heirs, E.H. Hobbie and Francis A. Reynolds, sold to Dr. David Koffman in 1974.”
