Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This rowhouse has lost a good deal of its Queen Anne character due to the siding and other alterations, but it retains its Queen Anne form. It is one of at least six such blocks in Northampton that follow similar Queen Anne designs, though their materials vary from frame to brick. The building is two-and-a-half stories in height under a side-gable roof with a jerkin head on the west end. The building like its neighbor at 1-23 Eastern Avenue is asymmetrical with a polygonal tower at its northeast corner and with its façade that alternates two-story shed roof porches with transverse gable bays. The second stories of the porches have half-length Doric columns that rest on solid railings and the first floor has replacement wrought iron posts. There are hipped roof dormers above the porches. Windows in the transverse gable bays are paired and sash in the building is a mixture of 2/1 and replacement 1/1 vinyl sash. Smaller and less ornate than its neighbor, this building nevertheless conveys much of the Queen Anne style. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. From the Form B of 1980, “This Queen Anne styled rowhouse is one of two on the southern side of Eastern Avenue.” It is designated on the atlas of 1895 as belonging to a Mr. Knight.
