Project Summary: Please provide a brief description of the projects
The Hampshire County Courthouse, one of downtown Northampton's most prominent structures, currently suffers
from extensive damage, which includes but is not limited to a leaking roof, water in the basement, and deteriorating masonry
on the exterior and interior walls. Currently, the building is not properly equipped for the harsh and volatile conditions of this
region's climate, and it requires major renovations in order to maintain its viability in the future. The Courthouse has served as
a Northampton landmark since 1886. It played a significant role in gaining approval from the National Register of Historic
Places to establish the Northampton Downtown Historic District in 1975. The preservation of this building is vitally important to
maintaining the history and culture of not only Northampton but Hampshire County as a whole.
The Hampshire Council of Governments (HCOG), as stewards of the Courthouse, is responsible for the preservation
and maintenance of the building but given its historical value to the county, the funding for its restoration should be a shared
cost amongst the county's towns and cities. In addition to public and private grants, HCOG is approaching the CPCs of member
towns and cities since the project falls under the CPA guidelines for historic preservation as a site on the State Register of
Historic Places and as home to the Hampshire County Law Library, which provides valuable resources to the public.
