21.347 and 21.348 DPW RecommendationCITY OF NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS 125 Locust Street Northampton, MA 01060 413-587-1570 Fax 413-587-1576 Donna LaScaleia Director Memorandum To: Donna LaScaleia From: Kris Baker, P.E. Date: December 1, 2021 Re: Petition No. 30408955 to Install Underground Conduit and a Joint Pole Location at Cross Path Road and Old Ferry Road National Grid is proposing to install the following as indicated on the Petition with Plan: • One JO pole #20-50 on Cross Path Road, beginning at a point approximately 85 feet north of the centerline of the intersection of Old Ferry Road for an underground primary riser; and • Approximately 330 feet of 2 to 4 inch conduit bank encased in concrete for primary underground cable beginning at Pole 15 on Old Ferry Road to the proposed pole #20-50 on Cross Path Road. The installation includes 2 heavy duty handholes in the street. DPW Engineering staff conducted a site visit, and the new pole location was field -staked by National Grid. The proposed conduit, handholes, and pole are greater than 10 feet from drain pipes, sewer pipes, and manholes. There are no trees in the vicinity of the project area and no apparent interference of trees. There is an existing 6" asbestos concrete water main in Old Ferry Road and in Cross Path Road, installed in 1963. The proposed conduit in Old Ferry Road appears to be located to the north of the water main, but within 5 feet, running parallel. In addition, the conduit as proposed crosses the Cross Path Road water line. The burial depth of the water line in this area is unknown and therefore, National Grid must conduct a test pit to locate the depth of the existing water line at the crossing prior to construction. The proposed conduit, handholes, and pole may be installed as proposed following test pits to determine the water line depth at the crossing location in Cross Path Road. National Grid must obtain an Excavation/Trench Permit and coordinate with the Water Division at 413-587-1570 24 hours prior to excavation of both the test pits and the conduit. The crossing shall maintain a minimum clear vertical separation of 18 inches from the water line and the conduit running parallel to the water main shall be offset by a minimum of 5 feet.
