What skills and experience will you bring to this committee assignment? I’ve always lived a dual life. I identify as biracial, with a Black father and a Filipino mother. I was born and raised in Northampton, where most of my friends were white; and in Hartford, CT, where most of my friends were of color. Since age six, when my mother accepted a position with Hartford Ballet, my life has never been the same. I’d go from being a minority in the morning to the majority in the afternoon. It doubled down on my dual life experience as both an insider and outsider. In my fervent efforts to ﬁnd center, I discovered anthropology. This was an organic transition for someone who is primarily a seeker. Ruth Benedict said, “The purpose of anthropology is to make the world safe for human differences”. Through my work, I developed Dance + Anthropology as an opportunity for teens and young adults to ask themselves who they are and what is important to them. Too often, marginalized children are saddled with representing entire communities while ﬁguring out how they themselves ﬁt into them. When we have an opportunity to share our stories, we learn, making for a more holistic perspective that protects our similarities and differences. I am a Northampton native and a dancer by trade. I work for a small dance nonproﬁt that is committed to advocating for using the arts as a platform to develop empathic, kind citizens that accepts each other's differences to create a more just world. I am a 2019 graduate of the Quest Program by Leadership Greater Hartford and continue to regularly volunteer/participate in their programs. I also have the honor to hold leadership roles at Asylum Hill Congregational Church. Locally, I continue to be a trainer for the Sojourner Truth School for Social Change & Leadership.
