To Whom It May Concern:
On July 18, 1991, the Northampton Code of Ordinances was amended to include provisions for
permitting sandwich board signs in the Central Business (CB) District, Main Street of downtown
Northampton and the Bridge Street sidewalks in the Neighborhood Business (NB) District only (see
Sections 3-16 to 3-19 of the Code of Ordinances and Section 7.9 of the Zoning Ordinance). As a
result, the regulations for sandwich board signs are in full effect. All sandwich board signs located
in the CB district on Main Street Northampton and the NB district on Bridge Street Northampton
must have a permit issued by the Board of Public Works. Any sign outside of the CB district (Main
Street,Northampton)and the NB district (Bridge Street, Northampton) is illegal in accordance with
the above mentioned ordinance.
If you do not have a current permit for your sandwich board sign it will be removed by the
Department of Public Works and you will be assessed a pick-up fee in accordance with City
Ordinance, Section 3-19. Any illegal sandwich board removed by the Department of Public Works
must be claimed by the owner within 30 days or removal; otherwise, it will be disposed of at the
owner's expense. Copies of the regulations and ordinances governing sandwich board signs can be
obtained at the Department of Public Works, 125 Locust Street, during normal working hours.
This letter constitutes legal notice in accordance with Section 3-19 of the City Code of Ordinances.
