DUBAI, United Arab Emi-
rates — Iranian security
forces used heavy gunfire
against protesters in a Kur-
dish town in the country’s
west on Monday, killing at
least five during an anti-gov-
ernment protest that erupted
at the funeral of two people
killed the day before, activists
said.
Videos circulating onlineshow dozens of protesters tak-ing shelter in alleyways asheavy gunfire echoes throughthe streets. Some show indi-viduals lying motionless andbloodied in the streets, whileothers show residents gather-ing at a local hospital to donateblood.Iran has been convulsed byanti-government protestssince the Sept. 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, a Kur-dish woman who died in thecustody of the country’smorality police in the capital,Tehran. The protests, whichwere initially concentrated inthe western, Kurdish region ofIran where Amini was from, have spread across the coun-try and escalated into calls forthe overthrow of Iran’s rulingclerics.Hengaw, a Kurdish humanrights group, said Iranian se-curity forces unleashed heavygunfire on protesters in thetown of Javanrud, where a fu-neral was held for twoprotesters killed the day be-fore. It cited witnesses as say-ing that Iranian forces usedheavy machine guns.Hengaw said seven peoplewere killed on Monday, whileanother group, the KurdistanHuman Rights Network, putthe toll at five. The latter groupsaid many of the woundedwere being treated in homesbecause of fears they could bearrested from hospitals, mak-ing it difficult to confirm thetoll. It said several were shotin the head or chest.Iranian authorities heavilyrestrict media coverage of theprotests and have periodicallyshut off internet access, mak-ing it difficult to confirm de-tails of the unrest. The semiofficial Fars newsagency reported protests inJavanrud on Sunday night, saying security forces werefired upon with live ammuni-tion. It said two people werekilled and four wounded.Later on Monday, state TVinterviewed a local security of-ficial, MohammadPourhashemi, who blamed theshooting in Javanrud on localgunmen who he said had ex-changed fire with securityforces. The report did not pro-vide further details.Funerals have often beenthe scene of renewed protestsin recent weeks, as they wereduring the 1979 Islamic Revo-lution that brought the clericsto power. The latest demon-strations mark the biggestchallenge to the theocracy inover a decade. At least 426 people havebeen killed and more than17,400 arrested, according toHuman Rights Activists inIran, a group monitoring theunrest. It says at least 55members of the securityforces have been killed.Jalal Mahmoudzadeh, alawmaker representing theKurdish city of Mahabad, toldthe Etemad daily that 11 peo-ple have been killed duringprotests in the city since lateOctober, many of them in re-cent days. He said some mem-bers of the security forcesfired upon homes and busi-nesses on Saturday, and hecalled on authorities to adopt asofter touch. The unrest cast a shadowover the World Cup on Mon-day, where the Iranian na-tional team faced off againstEngland. Iran’s players did notsing along to their national an-them, and some fans chantedAmini’s name at the 22ndminute of the match. The violence has alsospilled across the border intoneighboring Iraq’s northernKurdish region. Iran hasblamed the unrest at home inpart on Kurdish groups basedin Iraq, and has targeted themwith missile and drone at-tacks.Iran said Monday that itslatest strikes were necessaryto protect the country’s bor-ders, while Kurdish officialscondemned the attacks as un-
provoked aggression. Iraq’scentral government, which isdominated by parties close toIran, also condemned thestrikes.A strike late Sunday killed amember of the DemocraticParty of Iranian Kurdistan, said Mohammed Nazif Qaderi,a senior official in the KurdishIranian group living in exile inIraq.
The group said Iranian sur-face-to-surface missiles anddrones hit its bases and adja-cent refugee camps in Koyaand Jejnikan. The group alsoasserted that the strikes hadhit a hospital in Koya. The Iranian strikes come inthe wake of a visit to Baghdadlast week by Esmail Ghaani, the commander of Iran’s eliteQuds Force. During the visit,
Ghaani threatened Iraq with aground military operation inthe country’s north if the Iraqiarmy does not fortify the bor-
d e r.
Some Kurdish groups have
been engaged in a low-inten-
sity conflict with Tehran since
the 1979 revolution. Iran ac-
cuses them of inciting protests
in Iran and smuggling
weapons into the country, alle-
gations the Kurdish groups
have denied. Iran has not pro-
vided evidence to back up the
claims.
On Monday, Iranian For-
eign Ministry spokesman
Nasser Kanaani told reporters
that Iran had acted to “protect
its borders and security of its
citizens based on its legal
rights.” He alleged that the
government in Baghdad and
the Irbil-based administration
of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish
region had failed to implement
purported commitments to
prevent threats against Iran
from Iraqi areas.
The government of the au-
tonomous Kurdish region of
Iraq condemned the strikes as
a “gross infringement of inter-
national law and neighborlyrelations.”
