Re : Examination of Steel Beam
Acme Automotive Center
Northampton, Massachusetts
Dear Mr. Muccino:
As requested by you, on January 25 , 1988 , we examined a
steel beam supporting the roof of the referenced building. The
purpose of the examination was to determine if the beam had been
damaged by a fire that occurred in the workshop area below the
beam.
The fire was limited to the southeast corner of the
workshop . The flames charred the underside of the wood roof
planks and joists but did not burn through the roof . The beam
nearest the south wall was examined.
The beam was covered with soot . There was no paint on
the beam prior to the fire . We removed the soot and rust from
the beam in seveial areas . No discoloration of the steel was
observed. No distortion of the beam was observed.
Based on our examination of the beam it is our opinion
that the beam has not been damaged by the fire . The fire does
not appear to have been hot enough or of a long enough duration
to cause the steel to loose its structural capacity.
Very truly yours ,
