municipal green buildings.docxExcluding school facilities, Northampton has a total of eleven buildings owned or controlled by the City that exceed 5,000 square feet. Six of these were constructed prior to 1900.
Since 2008, a policy recommended by the Sustainable Northampton Plan has required that “all new siginificant City buildings will meet LEED™ certification standards and ideally be
LEED-certified.” The two facilities constructed following the implementation of this policy have both been LEED certified.
Please see https://www.northamptonma.gov/235/Whats-Been-Done for information on energy reduction efforts in municipal facilities. While the age of the municipal building stock presents
challenges for LEED certification, energy efficiency measures and capital improvements are underway at all buildings to increase energy efficiency.
