The :Zoning Board of Appeals issued a Special Permit for an 82.3." x 18" (10.3 square feet) ground sign located on two faces of the
existing brick planter with illumation consisting of two 70 watt bulbs. The Zoning-Board made its· determination based on the information
submitted with the application and the following graphics:
1. Northampton Cooperative Bank Sign, by Agnoli Sign Company, dated 318106.
In accordance with Section 7.4(4C) the Zoning Board found that:
1. The orientation of the bank building and its proximity to the sidewalk detract from the visibility to the front wall sign. The planter sign
would orient traffic into the driveway and indicate the location of the bank to oncoming vehicles from the east and west.
2. The ground sign is located on the same lot as the structure being advertised.
3. The ground sign does not exceed a height of ten (10) feet, nor have a surface area greater than eighty (80) square feet.

Zoning Board of Appeals Special Permit Application
Northampton, Massachusetts
Project: Northampton Cooperative Bank
Florence Branch Office -Sign Permit
8E. Northampton Cooperative Bank wishes to install a sign described in this petition atop
the brick planter that stands at the northwest corner of the bank's new Florence branch. The sign
will be two inner-illuminated rectangles, each measuring approximately 70" long by· 16" tall
(approximately 15 square feet total), displaying the bank's name and logo. The total height of
the planter and sign will not exceed the ten (10) foot height limit in §7.4, 4C(3). The proposed
signs are important to the bank belief that it must be more evident and recognizable if it is to
become that significant part of the community that it hopes to be.
Presently there is a sign, measuring 2'7" x 11 '6" (approximately thirty (30) square
feet) on the north exterior wall facing and running parallel with Main Street (Rte. 9). This sign is
above the line of vision and too high to be readily seen by pedestrian and passing automobile
traffic (see enclosed photographs). As a result, casual passers-by and customers may be unaware
of the presence of the bank unless he or she happens to look up enough to see the wall sign above
the building's windows. Additionally, it is difficult for to identify the building as the Bank's
new branch until they have neared or passed the entrance to the bank.
The new sign will be within the line of sight of pedestrians and drivers, providing
customers with notice of the entrance to the bank's lot from Main Street, allowing for safer
access to the bank's facilities than currently exists. The amount of light cast by the sign will be
muted, allowing only what is needed to adequately display the name and logo. From both a
safety and aesthetic concern, the new sign will be tasteful and appropriate for the location.
8F. The sign is accessory to a use permitted in the GB zoning district and is in harmony
with the existing use and character of the property and surrounding area as well as safety issues
concerning pedestrians and drivers in the vicinity of the property.
8G. See 8E and 8F above.
