GENERAL NOTES
GENERAL
THE CONTRACTOR AND SUBCONTRACTORS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
AND THE SAFETY OF THE WORKERS. THIS INCLUDES BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO, THE CONSTRUCTION
SEQUENCE, TEMPORARY HANDRAILS, EXCAVATION ACCESS, BACKFILL AND BARRIERS. IT ALSO
INCLUDES LIFTING OF MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT INTO AND OUT OF THE
EXCAVATION, TEMPORARY BRACING OF SINGLE-SIDED FORMWORK, TEMPORARY SHORING OF
EXCAVATIONS, AND STABILITY OF ALL TEMPORARY CUT SLOPES.
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE PROTECTION OF PEDESTRIANS AND VEHICULAR TRAFFIC WHEN
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES REQUIRE SUCH.
JOB SAFETY
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE JOB SAFETY OF THEIR WORKERS.
KLEINFELDER IS ONLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF ITS EMPLOYEES AND
SUBCONTRACTORS. NOTHING HEREIN SHALL BE CONSTRUED TO RELIEVE THE CLIENT OR ANY
OTHER CONSULTANTS OR CONTRACTORS FROM THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES FOR MAINTAINING A
SAFE JOB SITE. IF KLEINFELDER PROVIDES ADVICE ON THE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES OF
KLEINFELDER EMPLOYEES IN THE FIELD, IN THE PRESENCE OF CONTRACT EMPLOYEES AND
SUBCONTRACTORS, IT SHALL NOT BE CONSTRUED TO IMPLY THAT KLEINFELDER CONTROLS THE
OPERATIONS OF OTHERS OR HAS ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR JOB SITE SAFETY.
EXISTING UTILITIES
THE CONTRACTOR MUST FIELD VERIFY ALL EXISTING DIMENSIONS AND SITE CONDITIONS.THE
CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DETERMINING ACTUAL LOCATIONS OF ALL EXISTING UTILITIES
SHOWN ON THE PLANS AND THOSE UTILITIES OR UNDERGROUND OBSTRUCTIONS NOT SHOWN ON
THE PLANS. THE CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR REMOVAL OF ALL ABANDONED UTILITIES, OR
OTHER UNDERGROUND OBSTRUCTIONS THAT INTERFERE WITH THE EXCAVATION. LOCATION
AND/OR ABANDONMENT MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO SHEET PILE INSTALLATION AND
EXCAVATION.
DESIGN LOADS
DESIGN LOADS ARE BASED ON US STEEL SHEET PILING DESIGN MANUAL FIGURE 51 APPARENT
PRESSURE DIAGRAM AND E-80 LOADING APPLIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY
TRANSIT AUTHORITY (MBTA) RAILROAD OPERATIONS DIRECTORATE AND AREMA USING THE
BOUSSINESQ DISTRIBUTION. A UNIFORM CONSTRUCTION SURCHARGE LOAD OF 250 PSF IS
ASSUMED AT THE GROUND SURFACE.
SUBSURFACE DESIGN
THE SUPPORT OF EXCAVATION DESIGN IS BASED ON THE CONDITIONS IN THE SOIL BORINGS, AND
USES THE FOLLOWING SOIL PARAMETERS
GROUNDWATER
FOR THE PURPOSE OF THE DESIGN OF THE TEMPORARY SHORING, THE GROUNDWATER TABLE HAS BEEN
ASSUMED TO BE AT ELEVATION 114 BASED ON THE CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED IN THE SOIL BORINGS.
STRUCTURAL STEEL
STRUCTURAL STEEL SHALL CONFORM TO THE FOLLOWING STANDARDS:
WIDE FLANGE (W) SHAPES: ASTM A992, GRADE 50
ROUND HSS:ASTM A500, GRADE B
SHEET PILES:ASTM A572, GRADE 50
ALL OTHER SHAPES AND PLATES:ASTM A572 GRADE 50
MINIMUM WELD SIZE 5/16" CONTINUOUS FILLET. MINIMUM WELD LENGTH 10 INCHES. ALL WELDS TO BE
PERFORMED BY WELDER CERTIFIED PER AWS STANDARDS SPECIFICATIONS. USE E70XX ELECTRODES.
SPECIAL INSPECTION
THE SHEET PILING, WALER, AND BRACING SHALL BE INSPECTED TO CONFIRM THAT CONSTRUCTION IS IN
GENERAL ACCORDANCE WITH THE PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS.
ONE TIME USE ONLY
THE TEMPORARY SHORING IS TO BE USED FOR THE APPLICATION DESCRIBED HERE ONLY AND SHOULD
NOT BE USED AGAIN.
FABRICATION
THE STRUCTURE IS DESIGNED TO BE ASSEMBLED IN PLACE. STRESSES DUE TO LIFTING/TRANSPORTING
HAVE NOT BEEN CONSIDERED IN THE DESIGN.
CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE
1.INSTALL SHEET PILES TO EMBEDMENT SHOWN IN THESE PLANS. EMBEDMENT DEPTHS SPECIFIED ARE
MINIMUM REQUIRED.
2.EXCAVATE TO 1 FOOT BELOW UPPER BRACING LEVEL (EXCAVATION LIFT LINE 1) AND INSTALL UPPER
BRACING.
3.EXCAVATE TO 1 FOOT BELOW TEMPORARY MIDDLE BRACING LEVEL (EXCAVATION LIFT LINE 2) AND
INSTALL BRACING.
4.EXCAVATE TO LOWER BRACING LEVEL AND INSTALL LOWER WALER AND STRUT.
5.REMOVE TEMPORARY MIDDLE BRACING AFTER LOWER BRACING IS INSTALLED TO BEGIN
INSTALLATION OF BOX CULVERT.
SOIL STOCKPILES
SOIL SHALL BE STOCKPILED A MINIMUM OF 18 FEET FROM THE EDGE OF EXCAVATION.NOTES
H IS MEASURED IN FEET
ALL PRESSURES ARE IN POUNDS PER SQUARE FOOT
REPRESENTATIVE VALUE OF KA FOR USE WITH USS STEEL FIGURE 51 WAS ASSUMED AS 0.339. VALUE OF δ
WAS ASSUMED AS 14 DEGREES.
STRIP LOADS FROM THE EXISTING TRACKS WERE EVALUATED USING THE REQUIREMENTS OF AREMA AND
THE MBTA RAILROAD OPERATIONS DIRECTORATE.
