FIELD ENGINEERING
1.CONTRACTOR SHALL PREPARE A “TIE-IN PLAN” THAT VERIFIES THE LOCATION, ELEVATION AND
ALIGNMENT OF THE EXISTING 60-INCH RCP AT THE DOWNSTREAM TIE-IN LOCATION AND THE BRICK
ARCHED CULVERT AT THE UPSTREAM TIE-IN LOCATION. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL SUPERIMPOSE
THE PROPOSED BOX CULVERT ONTO THE “TIE-IN PLAN” TO CONFIRM ALIGNMENT AND ELEVATION.
THIS PLAN SHALL BE PREPARED AND SUBMITTED TO THE ENGINEER PRIOR TO ANY BOX CULVERT
SUBMITTALS.
2.CONTRACTOR SHALL PERFORM EXPLORATORY TEST PIT ABOVE THE EXISTING BRICK CULVERT TO
VERIFY ELEVATION OF THE TOP OF THE BRICK CULVERT.
EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL
3.THE CONTRACTOR SHALL MINIMIZE THE AREA OF DISTURBED SOILS. EFFORTS SHALL BE MADE TO
LIMIT THE TIME OF EXPOSURE OF DISTURBED AREAS.
4.EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION CONTROL MEASURES SHALL BE INSTALLED PRIOR TO ANY
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES. CONTROL MEASURE SHALL BE MAINTAINED AND SHALL REMAIN IN
PLACE UNTIL ALL SITE WORK IS COMPLETE.
5.REFER TO SHEET C-1 FOR ADDITIONAL EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION CONTROL INFORMATION AND
REQUIREMENTS.
UTILITIES
6.CONTRACTOR TO COORDINATE WITH UTILITY OWNER OF ANY EXISTING UTILITIES THAT ARE
LOCATED WITHIN THE WORK ZONE REGARDING SUPPORT OR RELOCATION NECESSARY TO
COMPLETE WORK.
7.CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RELOCATION OR SUPPORT OF ALL UTILITIES WITHIN
THE LIMITS OF WORK OBSTRUCTING THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION. RELOCATION AND/OR
SUPPORT OF UTILITIES SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH UTILITY OWNER'S REQUIREMENTS.
DEMOLITION
8.THE CONTRACTOR SHALL REMOVE AND DISPOSE OF ALL DEMOLISHED MATERIALS, RUBBISH,
EXCAVATED MATERIAL AND DEBRIS, UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL
LOCAL, STATE, AND FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS HAVING JURISDICTION. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE
RESPONSIBLE FOR OBTAINING AND PAYING FOR ALL DISPOSAL PERMITS AT NO ADDITIONAL COST TO
THE OWNER.
9.THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROTECT ALL TRAVELED WAYS FROM DUST AND CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS
AT ALL TIMES.
10.CONTRACTOR SHALL DISPOSE OF ASPHALT, BRICK, AND CONCRETE IN ACCORDANCE WITH
APPLICABLE LOCAL AND STATE REGULATIONS
11.THE CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR OBTAINING AND PAYING FOR ANY PERMITS AND/OR FEES
REQUIRED TO CARRY OUT THE WORK INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO DEMOLITION.
12.THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR OBTAINING A DEMOLITION PERMIT FROM THE CITY

13.WHERE THE WORDS "DEMOLISH AND REMOVE" ARE USED, IT SHALL MEAN TO REMOVE AND LEGALLY
DISPOSE OR RECYCLE OFF SITE AT A REGULATED PROCESSING OR DISPOSAL FACILITY.
14.DEMOLITION SHALL BE COMPLETED IN ACCORDANCE WITH, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, SECTION 02060
DEMOLITION.
15.JERSEY BARRIERS TO BE REMOVED & STOCKPILED AS DIRECTED BY ENGINEER, IN PREPARATION
FOR INSTALLATION OF PROPOSED BOX CULVERT. CONTRACTOR SHALL RESET JERSEY BARRIER
DURING RESTORATION.
16.EXISTING FENCING SHALL BE REMOVED TO INSTALL BOX CULVERT. FENCING SHALL BE REPLACED
IN KIND DURING RESTORATION.
17.EXISTING BOLLARDS ARE LOCATED ALONG A PROPERTY LINE AND ARE A VISUAL REPRESENTATION
OF THAT LINE. AS SUCH, THE BOLLARDS MUST BE REPLACED IN THE SAME LOCATIONS. IF
CONTRACTOR IS UNABLE TO REPLACE BOLLARDS IN THE EXACT SAME LOCATIONS, THE
CONTRACTOR MUST HIRE A REGISTERED MASSACHUSETTS SURVEYOR TO PROVIDE LOCATIONS AT

AND/OR ELEVATION OF EXISTING UTILITIES AND STRUCTURES AS SHOWN
ON THESE PLANS IS BASED ON RECORDS OF VARIOUS UTILITY
COMPANIES AND WHERE POSSIBLE, MEASUREMENTS TAKEN IN THE
FIELD. THIS INFORMATION IS NOT TO BE RELIED ON AS BEING EXACT OR
COMPLETE. THE LOCATION OF ALL UNDERGROUND UTILITIES AND
STRUCTURES SHALL BE VERIFIED IN THE FIELD BY THE CONTRACTOR
PRIOR TO THE START OF CONSTRUCTION. THE CONTRACTOR MUST
CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE UTILITY COMPANY, ANY GOVERNING

7.EXISTING CATCH BASINS AND DRAIN PIPES SHALL BE FUNCTIONAL AT ALL
TIMES. CONTRACTOR TO SUBMIT A SEQUENCING PLAN TO THE ENGINEER
AND CITY OF NORTHAMPTON THAT DETAILS HOW THE EXISTING
DRAINAGE WILL REMAIN OPERATIONAL THROUGHOUT CONSTRUCTION
AND HOW IT WILL REMAIN FUNCTIONING UNTIL THE CONSTRUCTION IS
COMPLETED. THE SEQUENCING PLAN SHALL INCLUDE ANY BY-PASS
PUMPING REQUIRED TO KEEP THE DRAINAGE FUNCTIONING.
8.CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACEMENT OF ANY SEWER,
WATER, OR DRAIN PIPING, OR STRUCTURE HE OR SHE DAMAGES. ALL
COSTS OF REPLACEMENT SHALL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE
CONTRACTOR. INTERMEDIATE COUPLINGS SHALL BE ALLOWED ON A
TEMPORARY BASIS ONLY.
9.WHERE EXISTING GAS, ELECTRIC AND TELECOM UTILITIES CROSS THE
PROPOSED TRENCH LIMITS, CONTRACTOR SHALL COORDINATE WITH THE
UTILITY OWNER AND CONTRACTOR SHALL SUPPORT AND BE
RESPONSIBLE FOR COSTS AND FEES. CONTRACTOR SHALL BE
RESPONSIBLE FOR PERFORMING THE WORK IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE

DESIGN LOADS
DESIGN LOADS ARE BASED ON US STEEL SHEET PILING DESIGN MANUAL FIGURE 51 APPARENT
PRESSURE DIAGRAM AND E-80 LOADING APPLIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY
TRANSIT AUTHORITY (MBTA) RAILROAD OPERATIONS DIRECTORATE AND AREMA USING THE
BOUSSINESQ DISTRIBUTION. A UNIFORM CONSTRUCTION SURCHARGE LOAD OF 250 PSF IS
ASSUMED AT THE GROUND SURFACE.
SUBSURFACE DESIGN
THE SUPPORT OF EXCAVATION DESIGN IS BASED ON THE CONDITIONS IN THE SOIL BORINGS, AND
USES THE FOLLOWING SOIL PARAMETERS

FOR THE PURPOSE OF THE DESIGN OF THE TEMPORARY SHORING, THE GROUNDWATER TABLE HAS BEEN
ASSUMED TO BE AT ELEVATION 114 BASED ON THE CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED IN THE SOIL BORINGS.

THE SHEET PILING, WALER, AND BRACING SHALL BE INSPECTED TO CONFIRM THAT CONSTRUCTION IS IN
GENERAL ACCORDANCE WITH THE PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS.
ONE TIME USE ONLY
THE TEMPORARY SHORING IS TO BE USED FOR THE APPLICATION DESCRIBED HERE ONLY AND SHOULD
NOT BE USED AGAIN.
FABRICATION
THE STRUCTURE IS DESIGNED TO BE ASSEMBLED IN PLACE. STRESSES DUE TO LIFTING/TRANSPORTING
HAVE NOT BEEN CONSIDERED IN THE DESIGN.
