Assignment On April 2, 2020, Terry Reynolds of T Reynolds Engineering contacted me to assist with his client's construction project at #175 Jackson Street in Northampton, Massachusetts. The proposed construction project will interact with some of the trees on the property. The city of Northampton requires that these trees be inventoried prior to the start of the project. Accordingly, I was contracted to assist with the tree protection for the project. II. Scope of Work The scope includes inventorying and assessing the existing trees on the property at #175 Jackson Street in Northampton, Massachusetts. All of the trees were given a tree identification number. The following information was collected for each tree. • Tree I.D. number • Species • DBH/Caliper (inches) • Condition • Risk Tree • Construction Impact • Construction Tolerance • Will Tree Protection be Required • Will Air Spading/Root Pruning be Required Terry Reynolds supplied me with drawings of the proposed construction project for #175 Jackson Street. He requested that I plot the inventoried trees on the drawings and to identify the trees that require tree protection measures. Observations – Site visits on 4/2/2020 and 4/3/2020 All of the trees were affixed with a tree identification number which will be referred to throughout the project. A tree identification number was affixed to every inventoried tree. Analysis Prior to the preparation of this report I inventoried the existing trees that may be interacted with during the proposed construction project at #175 Jackson Street in Northampton, Massachusetts. Each tree was assessed individually. A. Pre-existing Tree Health Issues (Please refer to the comment section in table #1) Most of the trees that were inventoried and inspected were trees along the perimeters of the property. Some of the trees inventoried were dead before my inspections. Specific Instructions For Contractors Tree #1732 The Large White Oak (Quercus alba) The critical root zone of this tree should exceed 27 feet from the main trunk of the tree. A dry well is proposed under the outside canopy of this tree. The work should be completed with a mini-excavator to avoid unnecessary root damage and branch damage. Tree protection fencing should be installed prior to the start of construction. The arborist can be available at the time of the excavation if needed. Tree Assessment and Protection 15 175 Jackson Street Northampton, Massachusetts 4/5/2020 McCarthy, Charles W. - Consulting Arborist ISA Certified Arborist Tree #1738 The Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) The critical root zone of this tree should be a minimum of 20 feet from the main trunk. The work should be completed with a mini excavator to avoid unnecessary root damage and branch damage. Tree protection fencing should be installed prior to the start of construction. The arborist can be available at the time of the excavation if needed. Tree Along the Perimeters Along parts of the north perimeter there is a proposed infiltration swale to be installed. When doing this work care must be taken not to damage the trunks of the existing perimeter trees. Protection fencing must be installed prior to the start of the construction. The arborist can be available at the time of the excavation if needed. Protection fencing must also be installed along the south and the east perimeters. Special care should be taken when removing and installing the existing driveway and parking areas along the south perimeter to avoid unnecessary root damage to perimeter trees. Please refer to the tree location drawing #1 on page #4. The arborist can be available at the time of the excavation if needed. Conclusion This report attempts to address every tree individually that is involved with the construction project. Additions and exceptions will certainly have to be made as the project evolves. The report should be used as a guide to the contractors and to emphasize that the trees are important to the city of Northampton, Massachusetts Hopefully it will assist the city and its’ contractors to work as a team to protect the trees.
