FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 GENERAL PROVISIONS
A. Attention is directed to the CONTRACT AND GENERAL CONDITIONS and all Sections
within DIVISION 01 - GENERAL REQUIREMENTS which are hereby made a part of this
Section of the Specifications.
1.2 DESCRIPTION OF WORK
A. The work includes the furnishing of all labor, materials, equipment services and tests
necessary to provide complete FIRE SPRINKLER system as shown on drawing FP0.0,
FP0.1, FP0.2, FP1.0, FP1.1, FP2.0, FP2.1, and as specified herein and as required by job
conditions.
B. Included, but not limited to, are the following major items:
1. Connect to new 6” fire service at service flange inside building.
2. Include within pricing an allowance for the following;
a) Field coordination with mechanicals above ceiling
b) Additional sprinklers for coordination with mechanicals above ceiling
c) A total of 40 additional sprinklers in excess of the sprinklers indicated
shall be considered part of the base contract.
3. Flush fire service at 880 gpm prior to connection.
4. Wet sprinkler systems with protection of the Basement and First floors including
above ceiling spaces and combustible concealed spaces.
5. Dry sprinkler system with protection of the Second floor including above ceiling
spaces and combustible concealed spaces.
6. Upper Attic dry system.
7. Provide N2 generator system for (1) dry sprinkler systems. Complete with
remote bleeder valve.
8. Provide all drains, pipe, valves, friction clamps, hangers, supervisory switches,
alarm switches, test connections and accessories.
9. Provide signage at all valves and connections including;

a) Hydraulic placard.
b) Control valves.
c) Drain valves.
d) Test valves.
10. Provide all penetrations in walls and floors and provide sleeves when
penetration is through wall.
11. Firestop all partitions.
12. Obtain all necessary permits, including but not limited to;
a) Fire sprinkler permit.
13. Perform all system tests and inspections as required.
14. Drawings are intended to show the general arrangement and extent of work to
be done. The locations given are approximate and are subject to modification
as may be found necessary to meet any structural or job conditions. The
Sprinkler Contractor is to visit the job site to verify all dimensions and job
conditions. Contractor shall coordinate his work with other trades.
15. Pipe sizes shown on the contract drawings are based on layout as indicated.
Any changes in layout require verification of final pipe sizes by Sprinkler
Contractor’s hydraulic calculations. Sprinkler Contractor is responsible for
providing larger piping if required based on layout changes.
16. Conduct water flow test for final hydraulic calculations.
17. Terminate 2” drain header at building exterior, 18” above grade.
1.3 WORK BY OTHERS
A. The following work will be included under other Sections of the specifications, and are
not part of the FIRE SPRINKLER Contract.
1. Fire alarm detection, wiring, and programming.
2. Electrical wiring.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Drawings, hydraulic calculations, and submittals shall be approved by Rybak
Engineering, Inc. prior to commencement of work.
B. Design FIRE SPRINKLER installation by a NICET Level IV, State of Massachusetts licensed
Automatic Fire Sprinkler Layout Technician or under direct supervision of a professional
engineer experienced in design of this Work and licensed in the State of Massachusetts.
C. The installation shall be accomplished by an authorized Fire Protection Contractor,
recognized as a fully experienced specialist in Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems.

D. All appropriate licensing requirements shall be met.
1. Sprinkler contractor shall have current State of Massachusetts Fire Sprinkler
Contractors License.
2. Contractor shall comply with 528 CMR 12.00 “Fire Protection Sprinkler System
Contractor Licensing”
1.5 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS
A. Installation shall comply with National Fire Protection Association Standards including;
1. 780 CMR “Massachusetts State Building Code”, 8th edition.
2. NFPA 13 “Installation of Sprinkler Systems”, 2013 edition.
3. NFPA 25 “Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection
Systems, 2011 edition.
4. NFPA 72, “National Fire Alarm Code”, 2010 Edition
1.6 SYSTEM DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
A. System Zoning Requirements:
1. Zone 1 – Basement - Wet
2. Zone 2 – First Floor - Wet
3. Zone 3 – Second Floor and Attic - Dry
B. Head Spacing:
1. NFPA 13,
a) Above ceiling, spacing to be as per UL listing of combustible concealed
space sprinklers, 144 sq ft or as per listing.
b) Office area, light hazard, 225 sq ft max
c) Mechanical and Storage Room: Ordinary Hazard Group 1
d) Attic sprinkler spacing 8 ft max perpendicular to slope, 130 sq ft max
with standard spray sprinklers. Attic sprinklers are NOT allowed.

C. Hydraulic Calculations
1. Flow test date: 4/3/2009
2. Flow test information:
Static Pressure: 85 psi
Residual Pressure: 75 psi
Flow: 1040 gpm
Elevation: 232’0
System shall be hydraulically designed in accordance with the following:
a) Ordinary Hazard group 1
1) 0.15 density over 1500 sq ft
2) 250 GPM hose stream allowance
b) Light Hazard
1) 0.10 density over 1500 sq ft
2) 100 GPM hose stream allowance
3) Design in accordance with CC2 head listing where applicable
c) Attic dry system
1) 0.10/2535 for SSU
2) Design in accordance with Attic head listing where applicable
3. Minimum Cushion: 7 psi
4. Where applicable, quick response area reduction credits area allowed.
5. Hydraulic calculations will be carried out to the point of the flow test data and
friction loss for the underground piping shall be included in the hydraulic
calculations.
6. Calculations shall be prepared with a summary sheet, detailed work sheet, and
graph as outlined in NFPA 13.

1.7 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit to the Owner for approval six (6) sets of shop drawings and descriptive data for
the following:
1. Shop Drawings
2. Hydraulic Calculations
3. Hangers
4. Pipe and Fittings
a) Aboveground – normally filled with water
b) Aboveground – normally dry
5. Sprinklers
6. Flexible drops
7. Supervisory Switches
8. Valves
9. N2 system
10. Fire Department Connection
11. A copy of the manufacturer’s installation, operation and maintenance manuals
shall be supplied upon completion of the installation.
12. System commissioning data shall be supplied (in a format recommended by the
manufacturer and per the instructions provided by the manufacturer) within 30
days of completion of the installation.

1.8 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS
A. Project Record Documents
1. A complete set of record drawings shall be submitted to the owner upon
completion of the project. Drawings shall include:
a) Field modifications to shop drawings
b) Location of any drains added to the system
B. Operation and Maintenance Data: Submit description of components of system,
servicing requirements, record drawings, inspection data, and parts lists.
1.9 WARRANTY
A. The Sprinkler Contractor shall guarantee all parts of his work for a period of one year
from the date of acceptance of the job by the Owner. If, during that period of general
guarantee, any part of the work installed under this contract fails, becomes
unsatisfactory or does not function properly due to any fault in material or
workmanship, whether or not manufactured, built or installed by the Contractor, he
shall, upon notice from the Owner, promptly proceed to repair or replace such faulty
material or workmanship without expense to the Owner, including cutting, patching and
painting, or other work involved, and including repair or restoration of any damaged
sections of the premises resulting from such faults.

PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 GENERAL
A. Materials specified for the work on systems in the building shall be new and shall be
manufactured in conformance with all prevailing codes or standards. Materials shall be
FM Global Approved or UL Listed. Where materials are not specified, the Sprinkler
Contractor shall furnish the best of the respective kind.
B. See Table on FP0.0 for complete reference of pipe and materials required.
2.2 PIPE AND TUBE, NORMALLY FILLED WITH WATER, STEEL
A. All steel piping to be ASTM A795.
B. Unless otherwise noted, branch line piping 1” through 2” shall be Schedule #40 steel
pipe with ductile iron screwed type fittings.
C. Unless otherwise noted, main piping 2½” and larger shall be Schedule #10 steel pipe
with roll grooved ends, grooved type couplings and fittings, and mechanical tees.
2.3 FITTINGS, NORMALLY FILLED WITH WATER, STEEL
A. Use of plain end fittings is not permitted.
B. Malleable Iron Fittings: ASME B16.3, threaded type; ASTM A47.
C. Mechanical Grooved Couplings: Malleable iron housing, "C" shaped elastomeric sealing
gasket, steel bolts, nuts, and washers.

2.4 PIPE AND TUBE, NORMALLY DRY
A. All steel piping to be ASTM A795.

2.6 FIRE PROTECTION SPECIALTIES
A. Riser check valves shall be equal to Victaulic 717R.
B. Grooved check valves shall be equal to Victaulic 717.
C. Dry valve shall be equal to Reliable DDX LP low pressure style with; alarm pressure
switch, air supervisory switch, air supply system, and drain connection kit.
D. Test and drain valves on wet systems shall be equipped with 175 psi pressure relief
valve, equal to AGF.
E. Backflow shall be equal to Ames Colt 300 Double Check Detector Assembly.
F. Grooved butterfly valves shall be equal to Victaulic 705W
G. All pipe hanger types shall be in accordance with NFPA Pamphlet No. 13.
H. Fire department connection shall be compatible with local fire department
requirements.
I. Backflow preventer test header shall be equal to Croker Figure 6806
J. Flexible drop shall be equal to Flexhead.
2.7 SPRINKLERS
A. All sprinklers shall be quick response.

B. All sprinklers shall be equal to Victaulic, Reliable, Tyco.
C. Pendent sprinklers shall be white.
D. Upright sprinklers shall have brass finish.
E. Sidewall sprinklers shall be white or chrome.
F. Sprinkler head temperature shall be intermediate unless noted otherwise on drawings
or required by NFPA 13 as coordinated with mechanical equipment and site conditions.
2.8 SEALANT
A. Penetration firestop material shall be equal to Flame-Safe FS900 of FST900 series
compounds.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. The Sprinkler Contractor is required to investigate carefully the structure and finish
conditions affecting his work accordingly. Any pipe or fitting required to complete his
work and not shown on the sprinkler drawings shall be furnished at the Sprinkler
Contractor’s expense.
B. All heads in ceiling tiles shall be located in center of tile. Assume 2x2 tiles.
C. All heads in hard ceilings shall be aligned with adjacent sprinklers.
D. Pipe all drains and inspectors test connections to outside at 18” above grade and
provide splash block.
E. Ream pipe and tube ends to full inside diameter. Remove burrs and bevel plain end
ferrous pipe.
F. Remove scale and foreign material, inside and outside, before assembly.
G. Schedule 40 sleeves shall be provided when penetrating walls.
H. All wall penetrations are to be firestopped.
I. Place pipe runs to minimize obstruction to other work.
J. Provide drain valves at main shut-off valves and low points of piping and apparatus.
K. All normally dry horizontal piping shall be pitched.
L. Care shall be taken to maximize dry system pitch and minimize number of drains and
drum drips.
M. A master drain list shall be provided, framed, and mounted at the system riser.

3.2 SYSTEM TESTING
A. All tests required shall be performed by the installer. The installer shall give the Local
Authority Having Jurisdiction, and Rybak Engineering, Inc. advance notification of all
tests. Contractor’s Material and Test Certificate shall be completed and forwarded to
the Authority Having Jurisdiction, and Rybak Engineering, Inc.
B. All tests shall be completed in strict accordance with NFPA standards.
C. Tests of Aboveground Sprinkler Piping.
1. Entire system shall be hydrostatically tested at 200 PSI for a period of two (2)
hours without a loss in pressure.
2. Dry system piping shall be pneumatically tested at 40 psi.
3. Full trip test required with water delivery time recorded in test and material
certificates.
4. All alarm and supervisory switches shall be tested.
5. 2” drain test shall be conducted.
6. Fire sprinkler contractor shall flush underground piping at 880 gpm prior to
connection of backflow preventer. Rybak Engineering shall witness flushing
test.
