Re: Bob Richards, 85 Riverbank Rd,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing
house and porch roofs to support proposed solar array.
I have investigated the roof framing of the 25'x 35', 2-story hipped roof house and a 6' deep porch
along the south facing side of the house for the proposed PV solar panel installations. 16 PV solar
panels are to be installed on the south facing roof of the house and 6 solar panels on the south
facing near flat porch roof. The house was constructed around 1900. The house rafters are full
dimension 2x6 installed at 18"on-center,with the span of the full-length rafter at 12'-0", with a
roof pitch of 9/12. The hip rafters are full dimension 2x8 and appear straight and true. 2x6 ceiling
joists are secured to the north and south walls and prevent the roof from spreading. The rafters of
the flat porch roof could not be viewed directly, however, the appear to be installed 24" on-center
and based on the depth of the roof are likely full dimension 2x4 and span 6'. The house roofing is
composite asphalt shingles and the porch roof appears to be an EPDM membrane.
I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on my calculations and a PV
solar panel unit weight of 42f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of
4'-6"on center on the house and 4' on-center on the porch and staggered to minimize the load to
any one rafter, the existing south roof framing of the house and porch are adequate to support the
proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State
Building Code.
