Dear Karen,
We received a complaint from a resident that you have converted part of your house to an
accessory apartment, that you have done interior renovations and that you have added a shed in your
yard. All those projects would require building and /or zoning permits. We have no records of zoning or
building permits for work at that location.
The City of Northampton's Zoning Ordinances do not allow an accessory apartment in a single
family dwelling without a special permit in accordance with Chapter 350, section 10.10. Also, any
renovations beyond the scope of ordinary repairs require a building permit in accordance with the
Massachusetts State Building Code.
Please contact me at your earliest convenience. I will be visiting your property in the near future
to investigate this complaint.
Feel free to call if you have any questions. Our telephone number is 587-1240 and our office hours
are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, excepting that we close at 12:00 noon on
Wednesdays. My email address is: Ihasbrouck(a)citv.northamoton.ma:us.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
