roof to support proposed solar array.
On 4/24/18, 1 conducted a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing for the proposed
ballasted PV solar panel installation. The 3-story,46'x 82' brick mixed use building was
constructed in 1989. 36 PV solar panels are to be installed as a ballasted array on the flat roof. The
roof is framed with 3%'k 18", flat 2x4 trusses installed 24"on-center, spanning 23' to a steel 1-
beam that runs the length of the building. I was not able to determine the dimensions of the beam.
However, based on my calculations the roof trusses have a load capacity of 40 psf snow load and
20 psf minimum dead load.
The PV solar panels will be secured to a ballasted rack system using 1 to 3—33 lbs. concrete
ballast blocks, depending on the location on the roof, in each of the rack's ballast pans. The ballast
pans are located 5'-6" o.c. along the length of the solar panels and 4'-10"o.c. along the width of
the panels.The ballasted array, designed by Ecolibrium Solar, Athens, OH, has been designed for
a 117 mph, V,e,basic wind speed as required by the 2015 IBC building code. Based on a solar
panel unit weight of 40f His., the equivalent weight of the ballasted racks and solar panels is lot
psf and the weight of the roofing membrane and roof sheathing is approximately 6.5 psf for a total
approximate dead load of 16.5f psf. Based on my calculations, the existing roof framing is
adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the
current MA State Building Code.
