0 Smith Amendment - Request COMPLETE May 26, 2017 Conservation Commission City Hall 210 Main Street, Room 11 Northampton, MA 01060 Re: Smith College Athletic Improvements MADEP File # 246-0701 Dear Commission Members: On behalf of Smith College, we are requesting an amendment to the Order of Conditions issued to the Athletic Improvements project referenced above. The college would like to remove several evergreen trees in the vicinity of the softball field reconstruction. These include three (3) large White Pines near the southwest corner/right field line, and eight (8) young evergreen trees and shrubs on the outside/east side of the softball outfield fence. These eight trees consist of pines, spruces, a cedar and a yew shrub. The three White Pines are old and starting to drop branches. They are in close proximity to the field where people walk and gather and are becoming a hazard. The eight evergreen trees/shrubs are within a designated mitigation area for the former dike repair project along Paradise Pond. These trees were planted several years ago as part of a classroom demonstration project before the dike repair project. The college initially wanted to remove these trees/shrubs before they become too large. But now that they are part of the mitigation area, the proposal is to replace them with ten Red Maple trees that have aesthetic and wildlife value. With a declining number of Red Maples on campus, the college chose this tree to enhance the aesthetics of the campus-wide arboretum. We hope the Commission is receptive to the tree removal and replacement proposal. Attached please find the on-line application form, photos and information, abutter list, supporting documents, and a plan showing the locations for the proposed tree work. We look forward to presenting this proposal at the next possible hearing. Michael Y.
