Dear Ms. L'Abbee and Ms. Acreman; ! ^
As per our recent conversation, it is your intention to add an In-Law apartment on to your
dwelling located at 88 Dunphy Road, which will result in one additional bedroom. In review of
your septic system plan your system was designed for a daily capacity flow of 568 gallons per
day. You have indicated to me that you do not have a garbage grinder as it has been
removed and the wires are capped.
You also indicated that you currently have four bedrooms. The additional bedroom will result in
a total of five bedrooms. The State Code for septic systems requires a design flow of 110 gallons
per day per bedroom. Therefore, your design flow of 568 gallons per day allows up to a
maximum of five bedrooms (110 per day x 5 bedrooms=550 per day required, which is
less than 568 gallons per day available).
Please be advised that you do not have to increase the size of your existing septic tank or
leaching field with the additional added fifth bedroom. The use of a garbage grinder is
STRICKLY PROHIBITED by the Board of Health. Please do not hesitate to contact me at
413-587-1213, if you have any questions regarding this matter.
Sincerely,

installed in the future. If a garbage grinder is not in use or if one is and it is removed you do
not have to increase the size or add on to your exiting leaching field. If you have a garbage
grinder in use and wish to keep it than your exiting leaching field must be increased to a
capacity of the size of that allows a of 825 gallons per day capacity flow.
Please write back to me with your intentions of having or not having a garbage grinder in your
dwelling. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
