Extensive renovations have taken place including a second floor added to the garage and connector as well as a second floor two foot extension with new shed roof on the north side of the main house. 13 PV solar panels are to'be installed on the shallow north facing roof. The newer shed rafters are 2x10, installed 16"on-center, spanning 14'-6",with a 2/12 roof slope.The original rafters are full dimension 2x6 rafters installed 16"on-center, spanning 12'-8". It appears that 2x8 ceiling joists,at 16"on-center are attached to the bottom of the 2x10 rafters and to the original north and south 2x6 rafters, preventing the roof from spreading. The original north 2x6 rafters have been cut at the ceiling line. The roofing is asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 42*lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the existing north roof framing is adequate to support the proposed 1W solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
