DECISION OF
NORTHAMPTON ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS
APPLICANT: SUZANNE & COMPANY
APPLICANT ADDRESS: P 0 Box 131, 58 PLEASANT STREET, (REAR)
NORTHAMPTON, MA 01060
OWNER: RICHARD SHEA
OWNER ADDRESS: 137 ELM STREET, NORTHAMPTON, MA 01060
RE LAND OR BUILDINGS IN NORTHAMPTON AT: 58 PLEASANT STREET (REAR)
At a meeting held on March 17, 1993, the Northampton Zoning
Board of Appeals voted unanimously to GRANT the request of Suzanne
& Company for a VARIANCE under the Provisions of §7 . 4 (3) , page 7-7
of the Northampton Zoning Ordinance for three signs; one with
street number on awning at rear of property; one four square foot
directory sign flush mounted on left edge of building; and a wall
sign not to exceed 25 square feet to be affixed flush to facade of
building at 58 Pleasant Street (Rear) . Present and voting were
Chairman Robert C. Buscher, Alex Ghiselin, and M. Sanford Weil, Jr.
The findings were as follows:
1. The Zoning Board found that the applicant had a topographic
circumstance relating to the orientation of the building and
access to the business is only available from the rear of the
building. Signage is needed to enable the public to locate
the business.
2. A hardship is created because of the rear orientation of the
building and without proper signage to the applicant's
business the public would have trouble locating the business.
3 . The requested use bears a positive relationship to the public
convenience since the applicant will be providing a service to
the public.
4 . The business will not create any undue traffic congestion nor
impair pedestrian safety because adequate parking provisions
have been provided by the applicant.
5. The requested use will not overload any public water, drainage
or sewer system.
a.
6. The requested use will not unduly impair the integrity or
character of the district or adjoining zone because the
business is in harmony with the Central Business district.
The Conditions are as follows:
1. Directory sign shall not exceed four (4) square feet.
2. Street numbers or letters on the awning shall be no larger
than 24" high.
3 . The wall sign shall not exceed a total of 25 square feet.
