There is an interior wall that he wants to remove. He is concerned that It is a load-bearing wall. I have calculated the existing loads on the second floor joists which are resting on this wall and I have determined that the wall is not needed, based on the current second floor use, which is residential. The live load for residential use based on the 6th Edition of the Mass. Building Code is 40 lbs/sq.ft. Twenty years ago or so, this second floor space was a cocktail lounge and restaurant. The loading at that time would have been 80-100 lbs/sq.ft. These same floor joists would not have supported this clear span load, so this interior wall was built as a load-bearing wall. Based on my calculations I am recommending that the wall be removed, and that no additional supports are required. After examining my calculations, if you have any questions please feel free to call me. Sincerely, Paul Stramese, President Stramese Construction Corp. cc.
