Crest DATE January 13, 1986 52 Pencasal Drive Florence, MA 01060 Dear Mr. Crest: An inspection at 8:08 a.m. on January 10, 198 6 by a representative of the Northampton Board of Health revealed that smoke, in excess of 60% opacity, was being emitted from your chimney at 52 Pencasal Drive for a period of 18 minutes This condition violates the Northampton Board of Health "Regulations Governing Emissions From Solid Fuel Burning Devices", the so-called "Wood Smoke Regulations" which went into effect on November 29 , 1985. Under authority of Section 31C of Chapter 111 of the Massachusetts General Laws you are hereby ordered to cease the operation of your wood stove (or other solid fuel burning device at 52 Pencasal Drive Assessor Map 29 , Lot 289 ) in violation of the regulation Please be advised that any future smoke emissions from your chimney in excess of the 60% opacity (density) limit will be subject to the prescribed penalities. You have a right to a hearing regarding this notice provided that a written request for such a hearing is filed in the Board of Health Office within seven (7) days of the receipt of Weis notice. In an effort to assist you in complying with the regulations we have enclosed a copy of our Guidelines for Reducing Wood Smoke Pollution. It should be noted that following the guidelines will not only reduce air pollution, but will be a more efficient use of your stove yielding more heat from less fuel and, also, it is safer as less creosote is produced. If you have any questions concerning this notice, or the guidelines for reducing wood smoke pollution, please do not hesitate to contact the Board of Health Office.
