G 7 Ed Smith cesmingnorthamptonma.gov> Ed Smith<esmithanoMamptonma gov> Wed,Dec 4,2013 at 1:54 PM To Northampton Housing<jhite@IDhamphousing.org> Hi Jon Carolyn Getter called with some concerns relating to ongoing bed bug treatment at her dwelling unit Minuteman treated yesterday for the first time and she thinks they were not able or did not amess her neighbor(Rosa Hernandez)to inspect her unit. Ms.Getter accepted my statement that she may have aggravated the infestation by tying to treat on her own for some time. She feels Ms.Hernandez may be the original source of the infestation, she thinks used mattresses and large stuffed animals have been brought borne from the landfill/transfer station. Ms.Getter says they are stored at times on the shared porch, and that the porch was not inspected. Lastly, this is apparently a non-smoking building(?)(Ms.Getter states she is chemically sensitive);Jonathan Hernandez apparently smokes on the shared porch(which enters Ms.Gettefs unit);and the mattress he sleeps on(he lives with his mother, against rules)she thinks is removed or would be removed during an inspection/treatment of bedbugs and the removal may be further spreading the bedbugs. Any of this new news? I'm thinking I walked by this building with Michelle this summer._if you could let me know your understanding of this situa0on I would be grateful. thanks Ed Edmund Smith Health Inspector Northampton Health Department 212 Man Street,Northampton MA 01060 (413)587-1339 Regular Schedule:Monday 8 Wednesday,8-4 30;Thursday 8-12 noon. Thu,Dec 5.2013 at 10'.06 AM Jon is right.Ms.Hernandez unit was inspected&came up clean. This is the 2nd time Ms.Hernandez has been blamed for another tenant's bedbug infestation&both times her unit came up clean. I did not see any mattresses/box springs on the shared porch, there are a couple oversized stuffed toy animals on Ms.Hernandez side of the shared porch however with the cold weather coming on,I don't think this was the source. There was a mattress in the middle of the living room floor&if I was a betting person,I would agree w/with Ms.Getter that Ms. Hemandez's son sleeps there. Ms.Getter's unit was treated for bedbugs the same day as the above mentioned inspection. One live bedbug was spotted in the bed. MinuteMan will be returning for at least I more follow up treatment at Ms.Getter's apartment. 1/6/2014 11:40 AM ton Mail-Cahill Bldg.0, G-70 hups://mail.google.com/maiVu/0/?ui=2&ik=9954d8032f&view=pt&s... Work will begin Monday, Tune 2nd, and take two days to complete. As you may know, the floors are composed of vinyl asbestos file (VAT) and have, after 45 years, begun to cup. It's time to replace as much as we can with the money we have. We will be replacing the first floor and mid-stairway landing in your building. Under Massachusetts and Federal law, the replacement of VAT must be done under strict environmental protocols, which will include the sealing of your front apartment door during the removal of the existing VAT and underlayment. There will be some inconvenience on the first day you and your guests will need to use the rear entrance to the building (through the porch entrance) during the removal process. Although the removal is governed by strict environmental safety standards, there is little danger. VAT is a solid substance and the asbestos contained in it is only dangerous if it is sanded and the particles become airborne. Even then, short term exposure, such as the one day it will take to remove the tiles and underlayment pose almost no hazard. The method used by Compass Restoration Services will eliminate any potential hazard. Air quality testing will be performed by Green Environmental Services, a testing lab located in Florence. We ask that those of you living on the first floor of your building remove any and all belongings (including floor mats) stored in the hallway. Please tell your friends they cannot enter the building as they normally do, as well, during that first day. Again, work will begin the morning of June 2 and be finished by 4PM on June 3. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me or talk with the Contractor. n fncerel Jon Hite Executive Director 49 Old South Street, Suite 1 • Northampton, MA • 01060 T 413-584-4030 • F 413-582-1350 • TDD 800-545-1833 x188 • mail@ ham ohousino.orq NORTHAMPTON HOUSING AUTHORITY IR Jon Hite Executive Director Equal Housing Opportunity May 21 , 2014 Dear Residents of B and F Buildings: There has been a change in the schedule for the hallway flooring replacement in your building.
