Dear Mr. Steinberg;
Please be advised that this office has received a complaint regarding you composting bin.
The complaint alleges that you are disposing of raw and cooked food scrapings in the bin.
This can become a nuisance by attracting wild animals and insects. I can also create
offensive odors that may affect the neighbors which the complaint is also complaining
about.
To avoid receiving a letter from this office, please call me at 587-1213 by
August 23, 2006,to discuss this complaint with you and to hopefully
formulate a plan to correct the situation.I will also be willing to meet you at
the site, if you wish.
Thank you for your anticipated attention and cooperation in the past and I
await your call.

RE: Composting
4r Mr. Steinberg,
this date an inspection of your compost pile on your property was conducted. It
eared that your composting procedures are acceptable. There were no odors or evidence
cooked or uncooked table food discarded in the pile as alleged in the complaint.
ould suggest turning the pile over more frequently to allow the top potion to compost
e rapidly. You may also contact Ms. Karen Bouquillon, Solid Waste Coordinator, at
-1059, to see what types of compost bins may be available through the City, if you wish
have one.
nk you for your attention and cooperation in this matter.
merely,
lest Mathieu

ar Mr. Mathieu:
As you requested, I am, responding to your letter of August 16 concerning a complaint
a have received about our composting. You wrote:
ne complaint alleges that you are disposing of raw and cooked food scrapings in the
-,post bin. "
I can state positively that we do not compost food scrapings. We never compost meat
fish or baked goods, which might attract wild animals. We do compost vegetables and
hit, egg shells, coffee grounds, etc. We have been doing this since 1967, and have
ver seen or heard of animals being attracted to our compost. Nor have we ever received
complaint from other neighbors regarding offensive odors.
n the season when bears are roaming, we take special care not to compost anything that
ght be attractive to them. We have had bears in our back yard -- three of them together
one occasion -- but nearer our house than our compost. We have had raccoons and
ssums on our back porch, but not in our compost.
I hope these facts will help clarify the problem raised in your letter.
