Re: 18 Lillv Street, Florence. MA- Inspection of Residential Structure for Solar PV
This letter summarized the inspection and analysis of the residence at 18 Lilly Street. Florence, MA to determine
if the structures are adequate to support roof mounted solar PV systems.
An inspection of the roofs and supporting structures were performed on March 15, 2016.The main roof of the
house(ridge runningcest to east) is constructed of rouh? X 6 rafters on 19 to 21 inch centers. These were
measured and analyzed for the additional dead load of two rows of solar PV panels;each row of modules being
mounted on two rails that are attached with mounting feet. Based on the anatvsis, the ratters will need to be
reinforced to support the increased dead load from the PV array as well as the fact that the loads will now be
concentrated at the points of mounting. The reinforcement recommended is to install(sister)one 2 X 6 against
each existing 2 X 6(see photo of similar job). The new 2 X 6s are to be-2 SPF or better and are to be attached by
two rows of 16d X 3"nails. 8" on center.staggered. The are fifteen rafters that need to be sistered and they are
nominally 14' Ion-. J he nvo gable end rafters do not nerd upgrades. The reinforcing is to occur prior to
installation of the arrays and with no snow or other live'loads on the roof.
/_rcurrplrof sistere t rniter.pictured in erenvrhjrd ra/ter m _h:rt this/rr•olect ticill uperade f VER) ra ter.
The solar rnounting feet are to be staggered and
spaced so that the loadinu is evenly distributed
between the rafters."Thus, if mounting feet occur-
every
ccurevery 4 feet of rail then there would be two t
mounting feet per ratter(for the 4 rails that make
Lip the tNvo rows).
It is my professional opinion• based on my review
and inspection, that the installations of the solar "
PV sv stems as proposed.meet the minimum ,
criteria of the Massachusetts State Buildine Code
?80 CMR Eighth Edition.
