L'Abbee Elizabeth Acreman 88 Dunphy Road Northampton, MA 01060 BOARD OF HEALTH CITY OF NORTHAMPTON MASSACHUSETTS 01060 Dear Ms. L'Abbee and Ms. Acreman; 212 MAIN STREET NORTHAMPTON,MA 01060 (413)587-1214 FAX(413)587-1221 As per our recent conversation, it is your intention to add an In-Law apartment on to your dwelling located at 88 Dunphy Road, which will result in one additional bedroom. In review of your septic system plan your system was designed for a daily capacity flow of 568 gallons per day. You have indicated to me that you do not have a garbage grinder as it has been removed and the wires are capped. You also indicated that you currently have four bedrooms. The additional bedroom will result in a total of five bedrooms. The State Code for septic systems requires a design flow of 110 gallons per day per bedroom. Therefore, your design flow of 568 gallons per day allows up to a maximum of five bedrooms (110 per day x 5 bedrooms= 550 per day required, which is less than 568 gallons per day available). Please be advised that you do not have to increase the size of your existing septic tank or leaching field with the additional added fifth bedroom. The use of a garbage grinder is STRICKLY PROHIBITED by the Board of Health. Please do not hesitate to contact me at 413-587-1213, if you have any questions regarding this matter. Sincerely, Ernest J. Mathieu, R.S., M.S., C.H.O. Director of Public Health cc/Building Department Ernie Mathieu From: Liz and Mike [liznmike @comcast.net] Sent: Tuesday, March 21,2006 4:26 PM To: Ernie Mathieu Subject: septic system Importance: High Dear Mr. Mathieu, Page 1 of 1 I have tried a few times to reach you by phone and have stopped by your office once as well. I understand you are probably extremely busy and am hoping that an email will perhaps be an easier way to reach you. My husband and I will be adding an very needed in-law apartment to our home(88 Dunphy Dr, Florence) for my Mom who is elderly and not in the best of health. The addition will be built this spring but first we need to find out what we will have to do with our septic system. It was just done to code in 2001. We know that the tank will need to be moved but our question is will we need to replace it? Where will the tank (new or present one)be moved to? Will we need to do anything with the leech field or can that be left alone? If you would rather meet with me,please call and we can set up a time when its convenient for you (413) 585-8977. Thank you and I look forward to talking with you soon. Sincerely, Elizabeth Rock-Ackerman 88 Dunphy Drive Florence, MA 01062 (413) 585-8977 3/27/2006
