Dear Mr. Moore:
OFFICE OF THE
BOARD OF HEALTH

You have requested comment from the Board of Health concerning your intention
to construct a two bedroom addition onto your home at 56 Cross Path Road, and
the suitability of the existing septic system.
Based on the septic system inspection report from Registered San,tarian,
Timothy Maginnis (a copy attached) , it appears that your septic system would
accomodate the proposed two bedroom addition provided that the maximum number
of bedrooms remains at two (2) and that no garbage grinder is installed. The
soil test conducted by Mr. Maginnis indicates that it would be possible to
repair the existing septic system if required at some point in the future.
On a related matter, please be advised that the Board of Health enforces no
regulations pertaining to the location of septic systems in a flood plain.
If you have need for additional information, please contact the Board of Health
Office.
Very truly yours,

Dear Mr McErlain,
We are adding onto our house at 56 Crosspath Road The addition includes expanding the kitchen,
adding a third bedroom above the kitchen and building a bathroom off the kitchen. We are
installing a Sancor Envirolet composting toilet in the bathroom addition and are requesting
permission to meet our additional septic requirements with the composting toilet. There is and will
continue to be a traditional toilet in the existing bathroom on the second floor. The expanded
kitchen will not have a garbage disposal.
Attached is a letter from Timothy Maginnis, environmental consultant, describing our current
septic system,a document from Massachusetts DEP regarding composting toilets, and a brochure
from Sancor regarding the composting toilet. We are planning on using the waterless remote
model. Please call me if you need any more information.
Please contact the appropriate office regarding your decision so that we may receive a building
permit.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Moore

Re: One Bedroom Addition&Compost Toilet—56 Cross Path Rd.,
210 MAIN STREET,Room 8
NORTHAMPTON,MA 01060-3167
Dear Mr.&Mrs. Moore:
The Northampton Board of Health is in receipt of your request for approval of the installation of a composting
toilet,in conjunction with the addition of a third bedroom on to your dwelling at 56 Cross Path Rd.
Based on current Title V specifications,a three bedroom dwelling,without a garbage grinder,will produce 330
gallons of sewage/day and(based on previous perc.test data)would require 446 sq. ft.of disposal area on your
property.A report on the inspection of your existing septic system, conducted by Registered Sanitarian Timothy
Maginnis,(copy attached),indicates that your septic system has 400 sq. ft. of disposal area. The use of a
composting toilet will result in a 40%reduction in the required disposal area,(446 sq. ft.—40%=267 sq. ft.).
Therefore the Board of Health hereby approves of the proposed addition of one bedroom to your dwelling along
with the installation of a composting toilet. Your existing septic system will then be considered adequate to
handle the volume of sewage generated by a three-bedroom dwelling.
This approval is conditional upon the following: 1)the installation of the proposed Sancor Envirolet composting
toilet,2)the addition of no more than one(1)bedroom to your dwelling, and 3)the continued absence of a
garbage grinder. Also, should your existing septic system (constructed in 1980) fail to meet code requirements
at anytime in the future, you would be required to repair/replace it with a septic system which fully complys
with Title V.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions concerning this matter.
Very truly yours,
Peter J. Mc lain

Re: 56 Cross Path Road - Garbage disposal requirement
December 9, 2004
Dear Mr. Mathieu,
On behalf of Mr. & Mrs Howard Moore of 56 Cross Path Road in Northampton, I
am requesting your Board to waive Northampton's requirement to design a
subsurface sewage disposal system for a garbage disposal at this site. This is a
repair of an existing system and the dwelling site has never had a garbage
disposal.
With proper operation and maintenance the proposed subsurface sewage disposal
system should provide many years of trouble free service without a garbage
disposal.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Thank you for your consideration of the above matter.
Very truly yours
